| Nahal Oz Junction

The Nahal Oz junction is situated at the crossroads between two kibbutzim in the Sha'ar HaNegev Regional Council—Kfar Aza and Nahal Oz—and Kibbutz Sa'ad, under the jurisdiction of the Sdot Negev Regional Council.

Eleven communities are under the jurisdiction of Sha'ar HaNegev Regional Council—Moshav Yakhini and ten kibbutzim: Or HaNer, Erez, Bror Hayil,  Gevim, Dorot, Kfar Aza, Mefalsim, Nahal Oz, Nir Am and Ruhama.

The Sdot Negev Regional Council encompasses 16 communities—twelve moshavim: Beit HaGadi, Givolim, Zimrat, Zru'a, Yoshivia, Kfar Maimon, Mlilot, Shuva, Shokeda, Shibolim, Sharsheret and Tkuma; two community settlements: Ma'agalim and Tushia; and two kibbutzim: Sa'ad and Alumim.

In November 2023, a cornerstone was laid for a new settlement called Ofir within the Sdot Negev Regional Council, named for the late Ofir Libstein, head of the Sha'ar HaNegev Regional Council and a member of Kibbutz Kfar Aza, who was murdered on October 7 while defending his kibbutz as a member of the emergency response team.

Events of October 7

In a surprise attack a number of terrorists attempted to infiltrate Kibbutz Sa'ad. Because the kibbutz gate was closed and the kibbutz emergency response team had been alerted and began shooting at the terrorists, the residents were not harmed. The battle raged for three to four hours. According to some assessments, the terrorists who attacked Kibbutz Sa'ad were all killed by the emergency response team.

The emergency response team deployed across the kibbutz fences. After some time, a shot-up vehicle appeared, driven by a lieutenant colonel who had been shot multiple times while driving on Route 232. The emergency response team recognized the vehicle, brought the officer into the kibbutz through the back gate and administered initial medical treatment. Concurrently, dozens of vehicles full of partygoers fleeing the Nova festival began arriving at the main gate of the kibbutz. The emergency response team administered initial medical treatment and brought hundreds of partygoers into the kibbutz.

In view of this, the emergency response team decided to block access to Road 232 leading from Sa'ad to Sderot, directing vehicles towards Netivot. In retrospect, this decision prevented hundreds of additional losses. Around 200 wounded partygoers found shelter at Kibbutz Sa'ad that Saturday, and dozens if not hundreds of vehicles that arrived at the Sa'ad intersection were diverted to Netivot.

As the terrorists began to approach the kibbutz fences from the direction of Kibbutz Be'eri and Kfar Aza, the "miracle of the tank" occurred. A lone tank appeared out of nowhere and eliminated dozens of terrorists at the kibbutz entrance.

Kfar Aza was the site of the fiercest battles in the region. More than 10% of the kibbutz members (117) were murdered on that day and 18 were abducted. Twenty-two residents of other communities in the Sha'ar HaNegev Regional Council were also murdered.

"The hopeless battle cost him his life."

That Shabbat morning, at the beginning of the attack on kibbutz Nahal Oz, Ilan Fiorentino of blessed memory, the kibbutz security coordinator, managed to rescue a teenager who had gone out for a morning workout and found himself caught in the line of fire. Ilan took the youth to his home and asked his wife to shelter him in the security room, together with their three daughters. He then set out to battle the terrorists.

Ilan managed to phone his deputy, Nissan de Kalo, and asked him to rush to the security response team's armored vehicle. Ilan lived next to the rear gate of the kibbutz, where the first terrorists infiltrated on that awful morning. He fought a lone battle against them while the residents were instructed to lock their homes and shelter in their security rooms.

This was a hopeless battle of one brave man against dozens of terrorists who stormed the kibbutz. Every minute he managed to delay the terrorists gave another family a chance to save itself from the horror.
